Nutrition Month Programme –June 2010
Introduction:
Ashraff Memorial Hospital Is one of the Pioneer institutions in the eastern province which provide health care services mainly to the public of Ampara district and part of Batticaloa district in curative and preventive care services.
We have established public health unit, Ashraff Memorial Hospital Clinical Society, Nurses Clinical Society and health education unit to strengthen our preventive care activities and health education programme to the area public and our staff.
We are happy to inform that, we have been successfully completed the nutrition month programmes which include nutritional exhibition, publication of health magazine “Suki”, patient guideline for diabetic care, Health Education session & initiation of home garden.
According to the health ministry General Circular: No: 01-14/2010 issued on 29.04.2010
Activities & Programme:
The following activities took place to commemorate the nutrition month.
1. Training for health staff on value of adolescent nutrition – 1st week
2. Health education programe for health care customer at OPD & Clinics- 2nd week
3. Initiation of Home Garden in the hospital. 3rd week.
4. Nutrition Exhibition –June 25th & 26th
More than 5000 public and about 1000 school children from 5 schools visited the exhibition. We focused on the following aspect with 15 exhibition stalls
Stall-01
Nutrition of adolescent’s premarital preparation of young adults.
Stall -02
Rainbow nutrition, nutritional value of foods, food pyramid & calorie requirement charts.
Stall -03
Nutritional aspect of some daily consuming foods (Tea, soft drinks, snakes & Coconut)
Stall -04
Hand washing & hygienic food preparation, technique tips of food preparation to preserve the nutritional value of foods.
Stall -05
Prepregnancy preparation and nutrition of pregnant & lactating mothers.
Stall -06
Important of breast feeding, demonstration of breast feeding technique including video show demonstration.
Stall -07
Preparation of complementary feeding, demonstration on complementary meals preparation, technical & psychological aspect of feeding techniques.

Food & diseases– here mainly focused on the following deceases & its dietary modification and life style modification .Diabetes, Hypertension, Dyslipidaemia & nutritional deficiencies (Iron,folate, Vit A & D, Vit.C, Iodine )

BMI Center – BMI was calculated for more than 500 beneficiaries of our exhibition, according to the BMI dietary advices were given.

Food & Carcinogens – We educated the beneficiaries on common food related carcinogen and anti carcinogen.

01. Introduction of Institution
Ashraff Memorial Hospital is one of the major hospitals in the costal region of Ampara District. It is the mother institution of more then 35 smaller institutions in this region and it is functioning as a referral centre for other peripheral hospitals. This hospital serves to a population about 0.5 millions
This hospital which was started as a Central Dispensary & Maternity Home on 1994 was later upgraded to a Peripheral Unit and gradually to the present status as a Base Hospital in 1999. Presently it is functioning as Base Hospital Type A.
Initially there was only one small building housing the central dispensary which was later converted to maternity ward and operating theater. With stage by stage addition of buildings the hospital presently has the following.
Partially completed 4 story OPD & Administration Building complex housing ETU, OPD , clinics, Dental unit, OPD & clinic dispensaries, Medical laboratory, Blood bank, Public health unit, Administrative offices and Auditorium.
3 story ICU & Theater complex housing two major theaters, one septic theater, Intensive Care Unit, Obstetrics ward with labour room, Special Care Baby Unit and Paediatric ward.
3 story Central Sterilization and Supply Division is under construction.

2 story consultant quarters with 4 units
3 story medical officers quarters is under construction
2 story house officers’ quarters
2 story kitchen and dining building is under construction

Ashraff Memorial Hospital is one of the major hospitals in the costal region of Ampara District. It is the mother institution of more then 35 smaller institutions in this region and it is functioning as a referral centre for other peripheral hospitals. This hospital serves to a population about 0.5 millions
This hospital which was started as a Central Dispensary & Maternity Home on 1994 was later upgraded to a Peripheral Unit and gradually to the present status as a Base Hospital in 1999. Presently it is functioning as Base Hospital Type A.
Initially there was only one small building housing the central dispensary which was later converted to maternity ward and operating theater. With stage by stage addition of buildings the hospital presently has the following.
Partially completed 4 story OPD & Administration Building complex housing ETU, OPD , clinics, Dental unit, OPD & clinic dispensaries, Medical laboratory, Blood bank, Public health unit, Administrative offices and Auditorium.
3 story ICU & Theater complex housing two major theaters, one septic theater, Intensive Care Unit, Obstetrics ward with labour room, Special Care Baby Unit and Paediatric ward.
3 story Central Sterilization and Supply Division is under construction.

MOU has been signed for the construction of a 3 story paediatric ward complex
